How can a photographer make images of war seem beautiful, even silent and peaceful. It seems inhuman to suggest images of war could be aesthetic but it is possible and Robert Capa could do it. I found Capas' images in the college library and sat on the floor soaking in the stories from every image, like stills from a hollywood war film. Through his images i could pause and replay the scenes and get so close to the action that my heart would start pumping..............(Read More)...................... Because of Capa I began the research for my degree thesis 'The sublime spectacle-The aesthetics of war photography' because believe it or not there is something in war that the human mind finds aesthetic and the research is there to prove it. Anyway, that discussion is for another day. Robert Capa risked his life to get the viewer closer to the action, a move that ultimately killed him. He said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough" and his ideas of photography shaped the way we think today. Plus I think if i had to be around in his time I probably would have swooned, for Mr.Capa was the Frank Sinatra, the Dean Martin, the Johnny Cash, the Elvis of photography. :D -R- xxx For those of you wondering what the hell I mean about the aesthetics of war, here is my thesis on the idea!!!
